Snapping the tag from her ring, she takes it from me. “I’m keeping this forever.”
I kiss her briefly on the nose.
Sliding the ring along her finger, I tell her, “You’re my one and only Sabrina.”
“I know, and you are mine.” She holds her hand out to admire her engagement ring.
The sales lady in the store had tried to sell me a ring with a much larger cluster of diamonds, but I knew as soon as I saw this ring that it was Sabrina. She has small hands so anything else would look terrible. The ring I settled on has a slightly larger diamond in the center of a cluster of smaller diamonds captured in a platinum setting. It looked stunning in the store and even more so on her finger now.
“It’s beautiful. Thank you.”
“Can I ask you something?” I hesitate feeling unsure and not wanting to take her back to the scan I missed, but I need to know.
“Anything.”
“Did you get the photographs and DVD from the doctor’s office?”
“Oh wow,” she whispers, jumping to her feet and running off towards the closet. “I was too excited at seeing you, and then too tired when we arrived to remember. I have them here.”
She retrieves an envelope from her evening purse.
“I couldn’t watch them. I needed us to be okay before I did.”
I feel sick with the reminder of what I did to her. But she won’t allow it and kisses me. “Stop thinking about that, and let’s go and watch our baby.”
She takes my hand and leads me out from the bedroom, downstairs and into the lounge.
“Here,” she passes me the DVD, “you better sort that out.”
Inserting the disc into the correct slot, I switch the TV on before joining Sabrina on the sofa.
“I wonder if we can tell what I’m having from the movie.”
“We’ll soon find out.”
I pull her into my arms and take the photographs out of the envelope. Studying them for a few minutes, I pass them to her with a large grin on my face. “You may want to look at these.”
She takes them from me and gasps.
Then the DVD starts playing.
Epilogue
Sabrina
I’m on cloud nine. I must be because I’m living my dream. The dream that involves a sexy, dark haired man of Spanish American decent, who has a hard muscular body and who only has eyes for me. A man who over the past three weeks has shown me with his actions how much he loves me, and how devoted he is to our child and me. Our son.
As soon as Lucien spotted the sex of our child, he was just as delighted as I am. So needless to say the very next day he had me bundled up in his SUV and driving into town to a large department store and the baby section. He insisted on buying so many things that he had to arrange to get them delivered. He also ordered double in some things to get them delivered to our apartment in Lexington.
The nursery in our home in Denver is now fully functional because Lucien had refused to take me back to Lexington until it was.
I’m now twenty-five weeks pregnant, and as I approach my last trimester we both want to be settled in Lexington before the baby arrives. After careful thought, we’ve decided that I’ll have the baby in Lexington so that we are close to my mom and Lucien’s family, and when our son is a few months old, we’ll officially move to our home here in Denver. So in two days we’ll be back in Lexington, which makes me nervous because no one in our families, apart from Ramon and Dante, are aware that I’m now a McKenzie.
Five days ago, I became Mrs. Lucien McKenzie after a beautiful, but short, marriage ceremony held by Dante in his church with Ramon as best man. Lucien couldn’t wait to make it official so he’d arranged everything with Dante but promised me that we’d do something to celebrate with our families back in Lexington, and that I would get to wear a beautiful bridal dress of my choice as well as having lots of wedding photographs taken with our families.
If I’m honest, none of that even crossed my mind until Lucien mentioned it. I just wanted to call him my husband.
Coming out of my daydream, I notice Ramon with his hands on his hips staring out towards the mountains looking as though he has the world on his shoulders.
He must be freezing out there in a shirt with no sweater or jacket.
“What’s so interesting outside?” Lucien asks, coming up behind me and wrapping his hands around my stomach.
“Ramon. Do you know what’s wrong with him?”
“The trouble on the site is still happening, although Eric has become friends with them, he thinks there is more than what we realize going on. So it’s a waiting game really. But Eric has been called back to base for his medical assessment and PT, which leaves us back at stage one, unless the contact Eric has can come in and help.”
I turn in his arms, wrapping mine around him.
“I hope so because Ramon looks like he has the world on his shoulders.”
“He’s meeting the new guy tonight in town before flying back home. Let’s hope this guy can go with him and get to the bottom of what’s going on before someone else gets hurt.”
