Cherished (McKenzie Brothers, #5)

Today I’ve exchanged my usual jeans for black slacks with a black shirt since I have no intention of visiting the site. The dark color of my clothing against my tanned skin causes my heritage to stand out. Or so Noah tells me. The only color against the black that I have on me today is my blue eyes.

As I watch Sylvia start to fidget, I move forward in an effort to put her at ease.

“You look good, Sylvia.” I step into her space and place a lingering kiss to her cheek, which is what Eric witnesses as he walks into the office.

He stops and glares.

“Ramon?”

I pause, not knowing how to take Eric’s abrupt use of my name.

I squeeze Sylvia’s hand, and then straighten.

Meeting Eric in the middle of the room, we exchange a quick handshake before we clap each other on the back. I’m not sure if it’s my imagination but the handshake seemed tighter than usual…the smile forced. Acting as though being caught kissing Sylvia’s cheek is an everyday occurrence, I notice Eric’s forced smile slip into an angry frown.

What is his problem?

“How you doing?”

“Fine,” Eric mumbles.

“Fine, right?” I perch my ass on the corner of Sylvia’s desk and watch the emotion playing over his face but I can’t read what it is.

Eric glares right back at me, which has me more confused than ever. We lived together when Eric was around before, so what the hell is going on?

Hearing the buzzer on Sylvia’s desk going off, I glance at her. She smirks and says through the microphone, “You need to come out here.”

Within seconds, Sebastian’s door opens and he comes striding out. He studies me before his gaze shifts to Eric. He frowns and backtracks to his office. “Let’s go in here,” he suggests. “Sylvia, would you mind getting us some coffee, please?”

“I’m on it.”

Noah

Today, I woke up in the apartment that I used to live in. It would have been even better if I’d woken up beside Ramon in the bed we used to share, but I have every intention of that happening sooner rather than later.

Before Ramon had left for work, he’d told me about the cabin he’d built on his family’s land by the stream that snakes around the main house. He was evasive when I asked about why he wasn’t living there, and was still in the apartment in the city.

I know that Ramon hates the bustle of city life, and can’t wait to escape back to his parents’ ranch house, or, best yet, his cabin. Of course, I could never visit with him if he’s at his parents’. After all, I’m his dirty little secret.

Grinding my teeth, I resolve that I’m not going to be anyone’s secret, anymore. It’s all or nothing, and if I’ve been reading Ramon correctly, that’s what he wants.

Having Ramon’s touch on my skin after so long has awakened the passion I have for him. It has lain dormant for such a long time that it’s surprising how quickly it engulfed me. Now, it’s taking all I have to keep my hands to myself.

This morning he’d looked so handsome that my heart had nearly jumped straight out of my chest. My dick had gone from zero to a hundred in five seconds flat when the scent of his cologne drifted toward me.

No sooner had the apartment door closed than I was in the shower jerking off, pretending it was Ramon’s hand wrapped around me. I closed my eyes as my hand slid over the wet flesh, the image of him dressed all in black filling my mind and I couldn’t help but smile at the memory. He’d had a noticeable bulge behind his zipper. Oh, yes. He’d responded to my lust, which was clear as day on my own face.

Ramon knows me, and he knows the signs of when I’m highly aroused. By that I don’t just mean having a heavy cock between my legs, but by all the subtle cues I give.

Adjusting the arousal going on in my pants, I try to concentrate on the passing countryside as it flies past the window of my SUV. I guess I should be thankful that Ramon drove me most of the way back to Lexington in my wheels. By the time we were halfway back, I was up to spending time behind the wheel, which helped to get us home sooner than Ramon had intended.

My first priority today is to go and visit my blissfully happy sister, Carla. The first call I’d made to her when I got back to Lexington, she had been so overwhelmed at hearing my voice after so long that she couldn’t talk to me. Her husband, Sebastian, wasn’t impressed, and he made that fact known.

Carla is the one who set my own tears in motion. Until I’d heard her voice, I hadn’t realized how much I’d missed my sister. My only family. Who abandons his only family?

Someone who wants to protect them.

I keep telling myself that. It works most times, but other times, I don’t believe my own hype. I was protecting them but sometimes I wonder if I was protecting myself more.

With a heavy sigh, I follow the directions that Ramon has given me so I can surprise Carla.

Sebastian knows I’m on my way to visit his wife, and although I got the impression he wasn’t happy about me wanting to meet up with her without him being there, he understood that I needed to.
