Chapter

Unprecedented
“Quitean interesting subject right?”
Chrismutters.
Inod. “For some reason history fascinates me.”
“Probablybecause you can’t remember your own past yet alone anything aboutthe history you were taught.”
“Idon’t know, it’s strange Chris, m-my consciousness comprehends, and I feel it in here,” I pat my chest, “My heart and soul are insync with the things occurring, yet my brain fails to take stepsforward.”
Hestops and faces me. “It’ll be fine.” He presses his fingeragainst my forehead. “You’ll recover this in time, and when thattime comes it’s because it is meant to be.”
Ipeer towards the resort entrance and catch sight of Mindy. I moveahead of Chris towards her. My anticipation hastens my pace. Sheglances at me and strings her lips into a smile.
“Howwas your trial”—
“Mindyh-how could you sacrifice yourself like that?” I get face to facewith her, her eyes connect to mine and her smile becomes a frown.“I-I don’t want anything to happen to you. Please, I beg of you…call it off.”
Sheturns away and takes a step towards Chris.
“It’smy choice Wes, you can’t change my mind.”
“Mindy’sright.” Chris adds. “She’s already sworn her oath.”
“Ahgoddamn it.” I whisper.
“Wesrelax, for all we know Alaska is a ghost town, just like thisisland.” Chris says.
Mindyclutches my shoulder. “We’re not going there to harm anything oranyone, we’re going there solely to investigate.”
“Andwe’re going properly dressed as a normal human so we can blend inwith you”—
“Youboth look exactly like my kind, how can they even tell thedifference?” I ask.
Chrisgrabs my arm and turns me around. “Look into my eyes.”
Istare. “And what am I looking for?”
“Oureye color tone is brighter and the iris consumes the anterior chamberand pupil that lies beneath the iris.”
Myjaw drops. That’s the first time I noticed. I peer and stare intoMindy’s eyes. Her tranquil color of honey gold coats the entirespot where the pupil is suppose to be. But maybe since I lost mymemory I could have overlooked this.
Mindysmiles and points at her eyes. “We have some eye contacts to coatour eyes.” She winks.
Chris sighs. “Enough… let’sgo get something to eat before it gets too cramped.”
"I'mjust going to go back to my room and relax. I could use a shower."I say.
Chrisnods, "Alright, well I'll have Mindy bring you something back."
"Anythingparticular?" Mindy asks.
"Anythingwill be find." I reply.
Mindygrimaces, "Well ok."
Ienter my room and slam the door shut.
Idon't know why, but I feel really angry. Aggravated. And I feltterrible all at the same time. This pain in the pit of my stomachcrippled my senses, killed my longings to discover, and erased anyform of excitement to enter.
Ilean against the door and slam my ahead against it.
Ican't shake that pain away. That same emptiness is still there; ahole punctured in my heart because I don't want to lose Mindy. Hersafety is everything to me... I-I think I've attached myself toher... grown accustomed to her in this short time with her.
Thisis ridiculous.
Ienter the bathroom and see the Jacuzzi sized bathtub. After lettingthe tub fill up I step inside the hot water, I relax my head on theheadrest and close my eyes...
~
“F*ck,these last twenty-five miles get longer and longer…”
Andrewsaid.
“Pleaseshut the f*ck up.” Ron said.
“Justrelax for a couple of more minutes we should be there.” I said.
“MobileBay is just a destination”—
“Waitwhat?” I said.
“Whatthe f*ck Ron”—
Silencebesieged us with the perpetual batter of wind whistling outside thecar. Overhead, a speck of vibrant light opens up the sky.
“Ohs-shit!” Ron bellowed.
Ihit the brakes. The car skidded to a rough stop and swerved into themedian and backlash into tree. The recoil jerked my neck forward andcaused an uncomforting rip.
Imanaged to creek open my eyes and stare into the heavens. The cloudsdispersed around the speck of light like a gargantuan cloud-driventsunami in the sky. The hiss of wind whistled outside our car.
“Youknow Wes… maybe we should be going the opposite way of that F*ckINGTHING IN THE SKY!” Andrew yelled.
Igroaned and rubbed the back of my neck. “Dude chill the f*ck out.”
Ronslapped me in the back of my head. He then shifted the drive tooverdrive. “F*cking go, go, GO goddamn it go!”
Theslap brought my senses to spring up in a hysteria of shock and awe. Ihit the gas, swerved back on the road, and sped away.
Istared at my rearview mirror and watched the ball of light’s slowdecline towards the place we were on route to. In seconds the ballsparked and exploded.
Inthat one split second time slowed down. The front tire bursts andsprung off. I hit the brakes, lose control, and the aftershock pickedup the car…
~
“Holyshit!”
Ibellow.
Ispring forward and feel a snap has my hand clutched behind me neck. Iroll over and splash into the lukewarm water until my head bangs intothe bottom of the tub. The pain is excruciating.
Irise from the water and rub my face.
"Ahshit that hurt." I groan and relax my head back on the rest.
