“I believe you.” She was shaking hard now, adrenaline racing through her. Sam opened the back door of the big SUV and the kids climbed in.
She fell into Sam’s arms, trembling, and choked back tears.
“Thank you for coming for us,” she sniffled into Sam’s shoulder.
“Thank you? Clover, I love you. You and your crazy brother and sisters. You know that, don’t you? I want you all to move in with me. I want you to marry me.”
“You what?” She reared back to stare at him in astonishment.
“You knew that was coming, didn’t you?” He grinned down at her and brushed her hair from her face.
“We… I…”
“Hey, we could have the wedding at the McCoy Family Jam!” His arm tightened around her waist. “We have an audience, by the way.”
She turned to see that her brother and sisters had their faces pressed up against the glass of the car window. “Thank God you live in a big house,” she said. “We’ll put them at the other end.”
“So that’s a yes? You said yes!” He turned and yelled to all the other police officers, “Hey, guys! She said yes!”
“Congrats?” one of them said, as he dragged a screaming, swearing gang member past them. “Hit me up later at the tavern, I’ll buy you a beer. A little busy right now.”
“Right, right, sorry. Time and place.” Sam turned back and kissed Clover, who was blushing.
He looked deeply into her eyes. “You said yes,” he said.
