Blood Secrets (The Wolf Born Trilogy, #2)

One of your scents got caught. We had to hurry before they tracked them down. This could all be over if Katherine and I didn’t get out of here. We’ll be there in a second.

“You should thank me for killing that worthless human you were fawning over.” Brock wrinkled his nose. “He could never give you what I could.” He ran a finger along my jaw.

I closed my eyes, trying to keep the contents of my stomach down. I had to be smart. “You’re right.” Donovan could give me love and support, things Brock could never provide. I leaned forward as if to kiss him.

“Thank God, you’ve finally come to your senses,” he said and lowered his lips to mine, startling me.

Slobber poured down my chin, and his tongue forced its way into my mouth and flailed around like crazy. This time, I couldn’t hold back the gag.

I pushed him off me, and his brows furrowed in confusion. I punched him hard in the face. The sound of bone cracking filled the air, and he fell to his knees, grabbing his jaw.

“Brock!” Tommy yelled as his attention turned away from Katherine and focused on his alpha heir.

The other two shifters rushed toward us, eliminating the last ten feet rapidly.

Katherine kneed her captor in the crotch. He fell to the ground next to Brock, cradling his balls.

I turned on my heel, took her hand, and dragged her toward the door. The other two were breathing down our necks. “Go open the door.”

She sprinted to the door as I turned to face the two assholes. I had to think of something to get out of this situation. I glanced around. Four girls were heading toward the door. Katherine opened it and waved them in.

Yes! Brock and Tommy couldn’t do much with them here and watching. “Leave me alone.” I channeled all my anger and frustration into my words. I wiped the remaining slobber off my face, letting it fuel me even more. “He cheated on me, and now you two are trying to bully me into being with him.”

The four girls stopped in their tracks to watch the drama unfold. That was the thing about humans: they loved the dramatics, and their television shows proved it.

“Now listen here,” the taller one growled. “You’re coming with us.” He tried to say it low, but I wouldn’t let it go. Did he think I was an idiot?

“No, I won’t go with you.” I stepped back like I was scared. “Don’t make me.”

“Sadddiiieee,” Brock slurred, both hands clutching his jaw. “Git ak her.”

“You four, leave her alone.” One of the human girls pulled her phone from her pocket. “Or I’m calling security.”

Brock glowered at me. I’d never seen him look at anyone with so much hate before. It both scared and empowered me.

“Thank you.” I turned my back on the four guys, emphasizing that I’d won temporarily. They wouldn’t let me get far.

I rushed out the door with Katherine on my heels. We took off toward the tree line, ready to get to safety.

We ran past the library, and five feet from the woods, I heard footsteps pounding in our direction. There were so many I couldn’t count them all.

I stepped into the trees and ran into something tall and hard. Large arms wrapped around me, and the smell of musky rain hit my nose.

Lillith blurred as she appeared next to me and wrapped her arms around her best friend. “Katherine, I was so scared. Are you okay?”

“Yeah.” She sounded hoarse, but not nearly as bad as I’d been afraid.

You scared the shit out of me. Donovan bent his head down and stopped. Why do I smell another man on you?

Brock kissed me, but we don’t have time for that. I looked at the others, panic coursing through me. “We’ve got to go.”

I’m going to kill that jackass. Donovan stepped around me, heading back toward campus. Slowly.

Stop. He had to get his head on straight. “We’ve got to go. Now.”

“Come on, man.” Axel pulled on Donovan’s shoulder. “They’ve got an army heading this way.”

Donovan sucked in a breath and turned. “Fine, but this isn’t over.”

Right as we turned to head toward the vehicles, ten shifters came into view.

“Run!” I yelled.

Our group charged forward, but it was too late. More wolf shifters ran in our direction, and the ten pushed themselves harder to catch up to us.

The trees flew past as we raced to Mom and Titan, but in my heart, I knew they would be on us in seconds.

Wings flapped overhead, alerting me to Egan’s presence. I risked a glance skyward and found him in his complete dragon form. I wasn’t sure if that comforted me or not. For him to go full dragon, we must have been under a threat similar to the fae.

The vampires ran in front, and Donovan and I took up the rear. The narrow pathway only allowed for two of us to pass at a time. The vampires were the fastest, so they weren’t our holdup. Our human forms slowed us, but if we stopped and shifted, they’d catch up.

We won’t make it. We were only about a mile from campus, and the enemy wolves were nipping at our heels. We have to fight.

Keep going, Donovan said, trying to encourage me. They have more people than us.

I heard someone lunge, and arms wrapped around my waist. I fell onto my knees.

Sadie! Roxy cried as she turned around to help me. Get up.

But there was no use. Donovan ran toward me and punched the guy in the ear. The guy groaned and released his hold. Another shifter attacked Donovan.

We were screwed, and we had no way to tell Mom or Titan.

I heard bones crack as Axel and Roxy shifted into their wolf forms, and Lillith’s and Katherine’s sweet smell grew stronger as they turned back to help us.

This had been a fucking suicide mission. I’d tried to protect the people I loved and cared about, and all I’d done was put them in a situation that was just as bad if not worse. If they got hurt because of me, I could never forgive myself.

Axel lunged and bit into the neck of the shifter attacking Donovan. Ten more wolf shifters ran into the mix, all of them in wolf form. Each girl had three attackers, and Donovan and Axel had four each.

My three attackers were in human form. Their goal wasn’t to kill me, just render me useless. I turned to find Donovan shifting into his wolf, his black fur sprouting across his arms.

“Come with us now,” the tall shifter from back at the dorm growled. He clutched my arm and dragged me back toward the dorm.

No, I couldn’t separate from the group. I swung at him, but he caught my hand before it could connect with his face.

“Tsk.” He chuckled. “I saw what you did to Brock back there. You won’t get the slip on me.”

Another guy bent down, grabbed my waist, and threw me over his shoulder, my face smashing into a backpack. He stepped toward school, and I did the only thing I could think to do. I lowered my head, aimed for his side where the backpack ended, and sank my teeth into his waist.

“Ow!” he yelled and tried throwing me to the ground, but I held on tight, letting my teeth thrash his skin before hitting the ground hard.

“I know he said to bring her unharmed.” A short, stocky guy glowered at me. “But I refuse to let a little bitch take me down.” He grabbed me by the hair and yanked, cracking my neck.

A low, threatening growl came from behind us. I watched as Donovan tried to reach me, but the four wolves surrounding him took him down … hard.

“No!” I yelled.

Chapter Twenty-One

I spun around and kicked the guy holding me in the nuts. I didn’t give a damn about the consequences. I had to get to my mate.

My captor’s grasp slackened, and I surged forward before another douchebag could grab me. I couldn’t see my mate with all four wolves covering him.

Right as I reached Donovan, Egan landed a few feet away from me. Thank God. We needed backup and bad.

My claws extended, and I dug them into the wolf right on top of Donovan. The enemy wolf’s mouth was dangerously close to my mate’s neck. As my nails dug into his skin, the dark brown wolf released his hold on my mate and whimpered.

Good. The asshole should feel pain.
