Rapture (McKenzie Brothers, #2)

“He was more possessive than he had been in the past, but I didn’t think that much of it at first until he started to threaten me. It was at this point I broke up with him and told him to stay away. I think he would have attacked me then and there if it weren’t for Noah walking in when he did. Not long after Noah discovered Gary was into drugs in a big way, not just as a user, but also as a distributor. So he informed a friend of his in the drug squad about him and they set up a sting. He got out on bail, came looking for Noah, but found me instead and used me for his punching bag.”

I close my eyes trying to block out the memories of his fists raining down on me. I shudder and continue, “That’s how I ended up here. Noah had been working with Ramon so I thought I’d come down here only Noah was gone. So Ramon took me in, he’d already hired a private investigator to find Noah. It made sense for me to live with him and we told everyone we were involved to keep everyone off Ramon’s back, plus he didn’t want people getting the wrong idea about me without him seemingly committed to me. And here we are, I’m lying in bed with the man I love and I really don’t want to get up, but we promised to visit Lily today so we need to shower and get some breakfast.”

“You’ve left me speechless, baby.” He kisses my nose. “I need to think about what you’ve said and I’ll talk to Ramon about upping the search for Noah.”

Sebastian slowly kisses my cheeks and each of my eyes as I melt into him with a sigh. Suddenly, Sebastian flips me onto my back and looms over me offering me a wicked grin before sealing our lips together.

Chapter 34

Sebastian

Lily has a private room in the hospital, not because of Michael’s wealth, but because she had twins. Speaking to my brother this morning he’d sounded worn out, which doesn’t surprise me with him not sleeping the past few nights through worrying about his wife and then with the arrival and the twins wanting feeding.

Going into the delivery room yesterday to see Lily had been a huge mistake. Seeing her in so much pain nearly had me losing the contents of my stomach, which made me realize it must be ten times worse for Michael and pretty close for Lucien.

Not wanting to act like a *, I’d stayed and waited patiently for the nurse to kick us out, which she’d done after taking one look at Ruben who looked green.

At least he’d looked worse than me, which made me smile.

“Hey, what are you grinning at?” Carla asks, squeezing my hand.

“I was thinking about the color Ruben changed to when he caught sight of Lily in the delivery room yesterday. My tough as nails brother nearly keeled over. Funny as hell and something I’m going to enjoy teasing him about.” I laugh.

Carla rolls her eyes. “Boys will be boys.”

I quickly grab her up in my arms and kiss the life out of her before setting her back on her feet. She’s so damn cute with the blush on her face that I put there.

Chuckling, I open the door to Lily’s room and drag Carla inside with me to find Lily sitting up in bed with both babies cuddling in her arms, which are supported with pillows.

No sign of Michael though.

“I made him go home to shower and change. He’ll be back soon, that I’m sure of,” Lily tells us, smiling and practically glowing from happiness.

Carla releases my hand and walks to one side of the bed. “How are you feeling?”

Reaching out she strokes the cheek of Charlotte, unable to reach Michael Jr.

“I’m fine. A bit sore, but what do I expect having shoved these two out. I guess I need to be thankful I had twins because Michael said we aren’t having anymore after the experience he had yesterday.” She snickers. “I mean it wasn’t as though he had to carry them for nearly nine months, or go through all that pain, which was so worth it. In case you’re wondering, Sebastian.”

I wince. “Can we not talk about the delivery part, I’ve just eaten.”

“Ignore him Lily and please tell me I can have a cuddle from one of your little babies.”

“You sure can. Do you want to take Charlotte as she’s the closest?”

Carla moves in and takes Charlotte, very gently, into her arms before sitting back in the armchair to the side of the bed.

Snuggling Charlotte closer, I watch, as Carla gets lost in the baby when it hits me that I want what Michael has. I’ve already told everyone that I intend to marry Carla, and then we can talk about babies. I’m not sure how the hell I’ll get through her labor, but Michael isn’t outdoing me. At least the twin gene is from Lily’s side of the family and not the McKenzie.

Looking back towards Lily, she’s watching me with ‘that look’ in her eyes. The same one Mom always wears when she’s scheming.

I laugh. “Lily, you can get that look off your face. You missed it yesterday, but I’ve already announced to the family that I plan on marrying Carla,” I meet Carla’s eyes, “but I’ll be asking in a setting she won’t ever forget.”

Hearing sniffling, I turn back to Lily whose crying. “That was so gorgeous. I knew you just needed the right woman to get you on the straight and narrow.”

Carla starts laughing. “Oh, he’s on the straight and narrow now.”

“Lily, what’s wrong?” Michael asks, coming into the room before dashing to his wife.

“Your brother.”

Michael straightens and looks at me as though he wants my head in a noose.
