Overtime

She smiled, her nose moving along his jaw. “I’ll beg for all kinds of things if you do this for me.”

“You don’t ever have to beg, baby. I’ll do just about anything for you,” he promised, kissing her nose before letting her go as she grinned up at him.

“I know, you’re too good to me,” she said to his retreating back and he scoffed.

“I could always do better,” he said, looking over his shoulder at her.

“So could I,” she agreed and he narrowed his eyes.

But before he could say anything, he saw that the kitchen island was covered in cupcakes.

His favorite cupcakes from Audrey Jane’s.

Turning, he grinned at her as she came over to stand to the side of the island.

“How’d you know these are my favorite?” he asked, reaching for one, but she stopped him.

“Audrey told me. But do you see what they say?” she asked and his brows touched because all he saw were his favorite cupcakes, and his first thought was that he was gonna eat them off Kacey. Instead, he looked back down and realized that they did say something.

We are having a baby!

Blinking, his heart stopped as his jaw dropped and he reread the whole thing again.

We are having a baby!

No, he read that right. But he must be losing his mind because he was pretty sure it said they were having a baby. How? She had the IUD in, and he would be the first to admit he was a beast of a man, but twice his boys got past that to impregnate her? That seemed a little unbelievable. But when he looked up, Kacey was holding a pregnancy test and he could see from around the counter that it said positive. His heart still hadn’t started beating again and his breath was nowhere to be found.

His throat was thick with emotion as she mocked him, giving him jazz hands as she cheered, “Surprise?”

“Really?” he asked around the lump in his throat.

She nodded, her lip coming between her teeth. “Yeah.”

“Are you sure?”

She nodded again. “I took nine pregnancy tests, all positive, and then I went to the doctor. They confirmed it.”

He blinked a few times, his heart pounding against his chest. “So this is real?”

She looked away. “Yeah, I thought you’d be a little happier.”

He scoffed. “A little happier? Are you crazy?”

She looked up, defeated, and he could see the tears in her eyes before she shrugged. “Guess I was wrong.”

“Yeah, you were,” he said, wanting to laugh at her assumptions. Coming around the counter, he took her in his arms, wrapping her up tightly before pressing his nose to hers, his eyes boring into hers.

“Because I’m so fucking happy, I’m speechless.”

Relief flooded Kacey as she looked into his dark, emotion-filled eyes. When he’d only questioned her, she’d immediately thought he didn’t want it. She had been toying with that idea for the last couple of days, along with the notion that he wouldn’t be able to handle it. But his face was bright, the biggest grin on his lips, his eyes wide and locked on hers. He didn’t look like he couldn’t handle it or that he didn’t want it.

He looked really fucking happy.

Grinning hard as she twirled her finger in his beard, love choked her as she croaked out, “Really?”

“God, yes, baby,” he whispered, his lips so close to hers. “You know I want this.”

“But with everything that’s going on—”
