Composing Love

“I don’t want to compose for anyone but him,” she insisted, and he looked between the two of them.

“Ah, so it’s like that, is it?” Thierney took a step back and rummaged in his pocket. “Well, if you ever change your mind, you give me a call, okay?”

He handed Minh a card and she took it from him, smiling. “Thank you, Mr. Thierney.”

“Rogan. Now, I’m off. Enjoy your evening. It was a masterpiece, my friend.” With one last wink and a light clap on Chris’s shoulder, he disappeared back into the crowd.

“Well, he was—” Minh looked down at the card in her hand and gasped. “Oh, my God.”

Chris laughed. “I’m surprised you didn’t recognize him. He’s only the biggest film producer in America.”

“I didn’t—I mean, I didn’t even think about it. I was just on auto-pilot. Of course I know who he is. He’s on some talk show every week and in all the magazines and—oh my gosh, I just made an idiot of myself in front of Rogan Thierney.”

“You did not make an idiot of yourself.” Chris put an arm around her waist and steered her toward the bar. “Now come on, let’s get you a drink to calm those nerves before everyone starts flocking.”

As they walked, Minh caught a glimpse of Daria and Shen standing by the stairs, looking as though they were deep in conversation. They’d been spending more time together, just the two of them. Daria insisted that it was because she and Shen were just friends, but Minh often caught Daria looking at Shen when she thought no one else would notice, or blushing when he touched her in any way.

Hmmm.

Before she could wonder too much about it, though, Chris’s hand dipped a little lower, over the top of her butt, lingering there in a slow caress.

“Does it still hurt?”

She shook her head. Last week, when she’d been officially hired as Phantom Studios music director, Chris had gone with her to get her first tattoo: a bird flying out of a cage. It was a symbol of so much more than her own freedom from fear and guilt. Kieu had been clean for two months now, ever since she’d gotten out of the hospital.

Through the silky fabric of her dress, his fingers traced the place on her lower back where she’d had it done, and she gently arched into his touch. “It looks great. Very sexy.”

Minh leaned into him, nuzzling his neck. “Does that mean you think I should get another one? Maybe one that people can see this time, so I can stand out more?”

Chris shook his head. “You don’t need anything else to stand out. You do it already, all on your own.”

She stopped and looked him in the eyes. “Only because you see me for who I really am.”

He touched his forehead to hers. “I will never stop seeing you. I will never stop feeling you. You’re the music in my heart.”
