Mettner’s face paled. “You think she’ll say no?”
“I think you need to spend some time building trust with her before you propose.”
“You think she doesn’t trust me?”
“I don’t think she’s ever trusted anyone,” Josie said. “Not really. Amber grew up in a house full of liars. All she has ever known is deceit. People who say one thing and act one way and then do something completely different. I think that makes it hard for her to trust. The best thing you can do for her is to be consistent. Every day you need to show her that you’re not going anywhere.”
He looked across the room at Amber. Her eyes fluttered open and for a split second, Josie saw blind panic. Then she blinked the room into focus. Her chest heaved with what looked like relief. She noticed them watching her and gave a weak smile.
Mettner said, “Right. The proposal can wait until things are better. And boss, I’ll do whatever it takes to show her that I’m in this for the long haul.”
“Don’t tell me that,” Josie said, nudging him with her elbow.
He looked down at her and gave her a quick grin. In three easy strides, he crossed the room and snuggled back into the chair with Amber. Josie watched them gaze at one another like there was no other human being in existence. A little bit of peace settled into her heart.
The doorbell rang. Trout’s nails clicked on the hardwood floor as he ran to see who it might be. Josie answered to see Chief Chitwood standing on her front stoop, a casserole dish covered in foil in his hands. “Am I too late?” he asked. “Can I join you?”
Josie gave a bewildered smile. “Sure,” she said, standing aside so he could enter. “Take that to the kitchen. Misty will tell you what to do. She’s in charge of food.”
Chitwood walked past her, giving Sawyer a mock salute as he went by. Josie rejoined Sawyer in the doorway. She said, “I’m glad you came.”
She looked up to see him nod. That was about the best she could hope for from him, she thought. Then he turned his head and met her eyes. For a split second, she saw the same blue sparkle that Lisette’s eyes had always held and her breath left her body.
“You know what Lisette said to me before she died?” he asked.
“No,” Josie mumbled. They’d both been with their grandmother when she took her last breaths. Before she passed, she had said something to each one of them, privately, into their ears.
“She said, ‘Dear, you have to find your family.’”

It is one of the greatest pleasures of my life to continue bringing you Josie Quinn books. You should note that the dam in this book is completely fictional. I took a number of different aspects from dams I had researched and made up my own. Usually, I like to get out into the field whenever possible for research, but because of COVID, I wasn’t able to physically tour any of the dams I researched. I had to rely on my dam expert, several people who had been to said dams, the internet, and my own imagination. As always, I do my best to make the police procedural elements as authentic as possible. Some things simply must be modified for the sake of pacing and entertainment value. All of this is my long way of saying any errors or inaccuracies in the book are my own.
I adore my readers. You are the best readers in the entire world, and I love hearing from you. You can get in touch with me through my website or any of the social media outlets below, including my website and Goodreads page. Also, if you are so inclined, I’d really appreciate it if you’d leave a review and perhaps recommend The Drowning Girls to other readers. Reviews and word-of-mouth recommendations go a long way in helping readers discover my books for the first time. As always, thank you so much for the relentless passion you’ve shown for this series. I am astounded and deeply moved by your enthusiasm! I hope to see you next time!
Thanks,
Lisa Regan

‘Wow this book blew my mind!… Utterly fantastic, I loved it. It kept me hanging on the edge of my seat unable to put it down. A huge 5 stars.’ Bonnie’s Book Talk, 5 stars
When Isabelle Coleman, a blonde, beautiful young girl goes missing, everyone from the small town of Denton joins the search. They can find no trace of the town’s darling, but Detective Josie Quinn finds another girl they didn’t even know was missing.
Mute and unresponsive, it’s clear this mysterious girl has been damaged beyond repair. All Josie can get from her is the name of a third girl and a flash of a neon tongue piercing that matches Isabelle’s.
The race is on to find Isabelle alive, and Josie fears there may be other girls in terrible danger. When the trail leads her to a cold case labelled a hoax by authorities, Josie begins to wonder is there anyone left she can trust?
Someone in this close-knit town is committing unspeakable crimes. Can Josie catch the killer before another victim loses their life?
Utterly gripping crime for readers who adored Angela Marsons, Rachel Abbott and Robert Dugoni. You will be sleeping with the lights on once you discover the first in this unputdownable new crime thriller series.
