“New images? You mean even more?”
He knocked off her hat and her hair rippled down, swaying to her bottom. “Damn, the red’s beautiful.” His lips lifted and he removed the wide-rimmed black spectacles from her nose. “After my first flameout I recalled the shooting. Not the most pleasant of memories, but along with it came the emotion I’d felt. We were close right at that time, and I finally had that memory back. Now I have everything, if I can just sort it.”
“You mean everything, everything?”
“There’s a scramble of new images, but I’ll get there.” He pushed his hands into her hair and stroked her scalp. “I know our circumstances are difficult, but I’ll always be with you, no matter where you are.”
Her heart flipped in her chest. “You said that to me in Wellington, a year ago.”
“I know. I remember, now.”
Brigs whistled. “Guys, mother with two kids approaching.”
Tyler moved in a flash. One second she’d been between his legs on the floor, the next on her feet and tucked in behind him. He pressed her hat and glasses into her hands. “Put them on.”
She set them in place, managing it just as two little girls, one dressed in a pink t-shirt and shorts, the other in a white baby-doll dress, darted around the corner and into their aisle. The girls’ brown ponytails bobbed as they ran, and their mother chased them, calling for them to slow.
Brigs came in beside them as the children and their mother continued on. “Okay, good to see you’re up. Did I hear you right from down there? You have more recall?”
“Yeah, but it’s still a jumble.”
Brigs slowly smiled. “Ahh, at least your flameouts were worth it.”
“Every single second of them.” Tyler slid his hand into hers then swung her around in front of him. “In the meantime, I need a name. Yours.”
She rose up onto her toes and kissed him. “It’s Jenna Winton. Nice to meet you.”
“Where do you live?”
“On a high country station about an hour from here. I came into town to pick up a new vacuum cleaner for the one that just bombed. Ronson Brown is my uncle and he’s ex-Force. Now, can we get back to the ravishing?”
“Have you bought it yet?”
“The vacuum cleaner?”
“Yes.”
“It’s in a trolley, a couple of aisles over. I saw you and left it behind. Ravishing, remember? I should get something for all that information I shouldn’t have just given you.”
“We’re in a public place, Lee. I can’t draw any undue attention to you, no matter you now have the freedom to move around.”
“It’s Jenna.” She glanced at the cases on the floor. “Are you here to stay?”
“Only to find you. Let’s get your trolley.”
“You know, I remember when you were more fun.” She winked at him over her shoulder as she sashayed toward her forgotten trolley.
“I remember that time too. Watch where you’re walking.”
“You’re still bossy.” She pushed her trolley into the main aisle toward the checkouts. Wow, she’d gone through re-identification, and still, he’d tracked her down. Although, what happened now?
Tyler followed Lydia through the store. Her hips swayed far too enticingly. “Brigs, get her to slow down.” If he did, he’d stop her completely.
Brigs moved ahead and gripped Lydia’s shoulder. “We came with nothing, Jenna. Do you mind waiting while we grab some things?”
Jenna. Tyler had to remember to call her Jenna. Damn, he needed to be alone with her, and soon.
“Sure.” She grinned at Brigs, then turned and lowered her lashes at him. “The men’s department’s this way. Come along, boys.”
His gut burned to drag her to his side and make sure she never left him again. Instead he had to keep his hands off her and somehow follow as she weaved through the store.
Brigs knocked his shoulder with his hand. “It was a lucky break finding her, but I need to make a call to Ben and update him.”
“You do that, and tell him once my mind clears and things slot back into place, I’ll send him a report.” Tyler removed a black Stetson from a hook and set it on his head. The fit was good, and he needed to blend in with the locals if she lived in the high country.
“Remember she has to stay here, and Gilchrist can never know we found her.”
“Gotcha.” Gritting his teeth, he turned back to Lydia. She pulled jeans and t-shirts off a rack and slung them over her arm.
“I’ll catch up with you two outside.” Brigs took off as Lydia crossed to him.
“Where’s he going?” She passed him her bundle.
“Somewhere quiet where he can’t be overheard. He’s calling Ben.” He tucked the clothing she’d given him under one arm. “I need toiletries too.”
“So, you’re staying for how long?” Her luscious lips lifted in a smile.
